What on earth is domain flipping?
Put simply, it’s the art of buying a domain name cheap and selling it on at a profit. In much the same way as it used to be possible to buy a house cheap and sell it on again for a profit.
Which sounds easy – and quite often, yes it really is easy.
There are a number of different ways you can get into the domain flipping business.
The laziest way is to purchase a domain name that you think is likely to be valuable and sell it on, without doing anything to it. If you’ve got a buyer in mind before purchasing your domain name, and could be all you need to do. This works even better for those typos we all make when we tap in a domain name by hand even with modern browsers and auto-complete (if you always spell “New York” as “New Tork” because you’re in a hurry for example) keep a note of your typos and think about buying the name if you think others will type as hurriedly as you.
Consider predictable future events that will be popular in a few months or even years but are buried on page 64 of the newspaper at the moment. Moveable events like the Olympics for instance where there is a build up before the event and massive traffic during the event itself.
But most domain flippers go a step further and increase value by adding some content to their domain. Face up to it, not too many people can find that one special domain that’s immediately going to sell for enough to pay off all your debts. Instead, you’ll need extra goodies to give your buyer more reasons to buy the domain names you’ve got on offer. Anything from selling a batch of related names sending traffic to the domain and Google Page Rank of the sites you’re developing.
Which means that the domain flipping market can involve simply buying and selling domain names, medium term where you build a bit of traffic and turning a decent profit when you sell on the site and long term where you’re making so much income that you’d need a hefty check to tempt you to sell your domain.
