In the individual entry

If you have not heard of the name Craiglist before, then it is definitely something you are going to want to make yourself familiar with. Craiglist is basically one of the most effective and resourceful websites available on the Internet today and you can use it for an incredible variety of tasks.

From finding jobs to selling furniture, you can do almost anything on Craiglist, and because it has such a wide audience, you know that you can buy and sell items incredibly quickly.

The Details

To be more specific, when it comes to the question of what is Craiglist, basically the best answer would be that it is a centralized network of online users, which works by offering free advertisements, similar to the classifieds in a newspaper, but which features listings from all over the world rather than just one localized area, and this includes employment, housing, personals, for sale/wanted, and events - just to name a few of the many different featured categories.

The site gets more than 5 billion page views each month, which is incredibly impressive, especially compared to other big name sites such as eBay. More than 15 million people use the site every month, and it receives more than 12 million new classified ads each and every month.

The Page View Rank for Craiglist is #7 just behind Yahoo, Time Warner, Google, Microsoft, News Corp, and eBay.

You will be really amazed when you compare the employee strength of these business houses; Yahoo - 10,000 employees, Time Warner - 90,000, Google - 10,000, Microsoft - 70,000, News Corp - 50,000, eBay - 12,000, and Craiglist - 23.

The History

The company was actually founded a little over a decade ago in 1995 by Craig Newmark to cater to San Francisco, California, and after incorporation as a private for-profit company in 1999, the company ended up expanding into nine more US cities in the year 2000 alone. Since that time, they have continued to expand and grow remarkably, and are now one of the most well recognized and respected websites on the Internet. There are now over 300 Craiglist sites in all 50 US states, and over 50 countries.

Controversy

Although you may not think it, the Craiglist site has actually experienced a great deal of controversy over its time in the business, and for instance in the year 2005 they received their fair share of controversy for not removing listings for the sale of Live 8 tickets on their site. Then in January of 2006 they were sued by the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law for allegedly allowing users to post discriminatory housing ads.

Regardless of all this, the most important thing to realize is how fantastic and resourceful a site Craiglist is and how much you can use it to your advantage. Whether you are looking for a new home, a bike, employment or any other type of online advertisement, the site has everything you need.

Any person who is into affiliate marketing can really take advantage of the popularity and reach of Craiglist for advertising his affiliate products.
