Pay Per Sale versus Pay Per Lead: Which Program Works Best

by admin on September 9, 2007

It is true that we all live in a world where everything is convenient and could be done comfortably due to the modernity of our lifestyle, mostly, brought about by the advancement in technology. And right now, there are several types of marketing programs in which we could boost our business and more people are taking advantage of the internet when it comes to promoting and marketing their product to reach a wider range of audience.

Because of this, there have been many models of affiliate marketing programs that business people are using and two of the most popular are the pay per sale program and the pay per lead program.

But, we may want to know, which one really works the best when it comes to giving a higher revenue or profit? Is it the pay per sale or the pay per lead kind of approach?

Difference between Pay per sale And Pay per lead

We all know that both the pay-per-sale and the pay-per-lead are methods of marketing our products on the cyberspace and we know that advertising is a great way to make people get familiarized with what we are offering.

On the other hand, you may somehow be unfamiliar with the real meaning and difference between pay-per-sale and pay-per-lead marketing program.

The pay-per-sale is a type of affiliate marketing program where the advertiser pays its chosen affiliate that is solely based on the conversion of sales. For example, a customer follows the affiliate link on to the advertiser’s site and makes a purchase. During such purchase, the affiliate marketer is identified usually through the help of cookies and based on this information; the affiliate is paid a certain agreed commission.

Of course, the affiliate gets a high commission if this happens; however, pay-per-sale program usually has the lowest conversion rate as the customer is required to take out his wallet and that requires quite a bit of convincing.

On the other hand, the pay-per-lead kind of affiliate marketing program works where the advertiser pays the affiliate based on the conversion of leads like a software download, completion of a sign-up of a newsletter or subscription, or trial offer sign-up and the likes. And if the customer follows an affiliate link to the advertiser’s website and gets to complete the requirements, then the affiliate gets paid a certain agreed commission.

In case of Pay-Per-Lead programs, the commission is, usually, fairly small compared to Pay-Per-Sale programs. But, with good promotion techniques, Pay-Per-Lead programs can result in huge conversions. This, in turn, can translate into a big revenue chunk to the affiliate.

They say that there is a big difference between the two, especially, when it comes to the profit that the affiliate website can get, but the one that gives the best revenue and gives the best benefit to the affiliate is the pay-per-lead program.

If you are still skeptical about which system or type of approach to choose, then it is best that you try both and see for yourself which works best for you.
