7 Tips For A Smooth Switch To A New Domain touches upon an article that I had found in the March 19, 2007 newsletter issue of SitePro News.

The title of this article was “How To Reduce The Pain Of Switching Domains” authored by Ross Dunn.

Ross Dunn is the founder and CEO of StepForth Search Engine Placements Inc. based in Canada.

In this article, the author has explained in 7 steps how to switch from an existing domain to a without losing the search engine placements and rankings.

What interested me most was step number 6 where he was talking on how to implement a 301 redirect for the “non-www” traffic so that they get forwarded to the preferred “www” version of the domain.

In fact, I feel that this need to be implemented by every web publisher whether they are or not. This procedure becomes necessary for every domain because search engines view the domain name with and without www as different websites. This leads to dilution of your link popularity and this, in turn, will affect your google page rank.

Ross Dunn has given the code to add to your .htaccess file for a permanent redirect of your “non-www” domain name to your “www” domain name. This will ensure consistency and also make sure that you do not lose out on link popularity and page rank.

Websites developed using Authority Site Center become hugely popular, attracting tons of visitors, within a very short period of time. I would suggest that you should consolidate your advantage further by implementing this 301 redirect code-change to your .htaccess file. In fact, I have already implemented this change to all my websites. It takes hardly 5 minutes per website to implement this change.

(I hope you are already developing your sites using Authority Site Center. If you are among the very unlucky few who are still not a member of Authority Site Center, then I would strongly urge you to become a member without any further delay and take advantage of its superior tools for web publishing and web marketing.)

If you have any difficulty in implementing this change, then send me a comment to this post and I will explain it to you.

    Very good information here!

We are finding most people don’t understand the “www” issue and how choosing one or the other in the beginning makes a difference in pagerank and other SEO considerations.

    Great post!
